APAC, the Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing, and VPAC, the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing were formed as a result of Government initiatives to stimulate High-Performance Computing in Australia and Victoria respectively.
VPAC, a partnership of Victorian Universities, is a partner in APAC. Both APAC and VPAC are investing in large central facilities which will be available to researchers at Melbourne University with suitable problems. There is a clear path from the local facilities onto the VPAC and/or APAC facilities. Potential users of the peak facilities are advised to begin at the local level in order to establish the performance of their programs and estimate the required resources on the larger machines. As both the VPAC and APAC central facilities will consist of a cluster of SMP nodes, jobs targetted at vector-processing will still be run on the SX-4.
Resources at the VPAC and APAC facilities will be allocated in response to applications submitted by potential users. Each submission will be reviewed as to merit and successful submissions will be allocated a block of resources. Calls for applications to use the APAC facility will be made in late April and late October each year for allocations to start in the following July and January.
